They sneak up on you! It was my first year at Youma and I had a good time. All my misfortunes were not con related, instead it happened whenever I left the convention center. Detroit cabs suck and the Holiday Inn has seen better days. The convention has the feel of a small convention but had many attendees, which is no surprise that they are expanding to an extra venue next year. I will likely come back next year, so long as I convince a few more friends to attend. We lost a few to various reasons at the last minute. They were missed. Youmacon Highlights: Miss January, creative costumes, cool photos, nice weather, confusing venue, cabby drama, hangouts, and great rave. Day 1 Friday - Sense of Direction I shared a room with Lightpriestess, Zacloudseth, Yagi Sempai and Eleventh Photograph at the Holiday Inn; it was about 10 blocks away but there was a free shuttle service. I forgot my camera on Friday so no pictures :(. I spent most of the day trying to figure out the layout of the convention centre. It's so confusing. It is multilevelled, circular and has 5 buildings connected to each other; almost a labyrinth. I wore my Captain Yoruichi cosplay and got confused for Soi Fon too many times to count. Although the one person who did get it right was a nice guy who made up for all the mistakes. I got my Youmacon Calendar and found out I was Miss January. My Mercedes cosplay got in and I was pleased to find out that 8 of 14 photos had a Canadian involved; either photographer, cosplayer or both. GO CANADA! Spent the evening hanging out with friends at Volt, the Marriott restaurant. It was delicious and I highly recommend it. Then the party moved up to the Marriott rooms. Then begins the cabby drama. Our group hopped a cab to get back to the Holiday Inn and the cab driver wouldn't turn on the metre. He wanted us to pay $10 for a 5 minute cab ride. I gave him $6 and called it a night. This happened every time we took a cab, a total of probably 5-6 rides over the weekend, it was ridiculous. I would have taken the hotel shuttle if it didn't break down on Friday night. My roomates and myself Day 2 Saturday - Time for Action Most of my day was spent doing a photoshoot with Eleventh Photograph in Yoruichi, with Yagi Sempai's help. It includes a lot of action and I can't wait to see and share the photos. I checked out the dealer's room, which was pretty small and bought a wig from Arda for a new 2012 cosplay. Hint: Prince of Persia ;) I missed out on the Masquerade and TeamFourStar events because of the crazy lineups. They seemed never-ending and I didn't want to miss out on other things while waiting in line. The lovely VickyBunnyAngel won best is show craftsmanship and got a huge trophy. Well deserved! Afterwards we shared some drinks and dinner at Volt. Afterwards I went to the rave which was the best one I have attended at a convention. They played actual rave music rather than random anime, un-danceable, music. The rest of the night was spent catching up with friends in different rooms of the Marriott. Day 3 Sunday - Mellow
Sunday was easy going since I didn't dress up. I made the rounds of the convention and stocked up on some cheap goods at the CVS. Most of the day was spent helping my friends with photoshoots, then finding friends and saying goodbye. My highlight of the day was the guy in the creeper costume from Minecraft (The first picture in this blog). My group and I were walking, we spotted it then started laughing. It then stated to walk in our direction, then chase us. So funny, it made my day.
