Worn at:
Katsucon 2020 - Washington DC
Why this costume?
I love the colour scheme of galaxies. Also I stocked up on these materials to also make my Allura gown. Both are space themed. I love poofy gowns so this one is inspired by Giambatista Valli.
Description:
Headpiece: I added lots of zip ties to two the bands on this headband and spray painted it gold plus a layer of spray glitter. The stars are x-mas decorations adorned by toothpicks and chunky glitter on a worbla ring. A wire holds the worbla ring to thinker wire which is also wired down to the headdress. More x-mas ornaments were used for the floral detail - the little blue flowers. The vines and leaves were paired a new shade of gold to match the rest. Why so much wire? Because it's easily removable so that I can pack the fragile star in a box to travel while the zip tie part can just sit at the bottom of my luggage.
Accessories: The body jewelry was bought from Aliexpress for another original design creation but the colours are a good match for this look. The rhinestone covered tights are also from Aliexpress. They are tricky since they can get caught on themselves.
Dress: The base is a twill mini dress with boning using a modified Butterick vintage pattern B6454 with a circle skirt bottom with horsehair trim. In between the organza layers are gathered crinoline layers. All the fabric was bought from Aliexpress, technically it is for decorating weddings.
Since the layers are very fluffy I marked down where all my layers would go in white before starting. So when time came to pin the many layers I wasn't guessing where they should go.
There's 5m of gathered pink organza on the bottom layer with a hot pink crinoline layer. Then 4.5m of gathered 2-tone purple organza, with a purple crinoline layer. The fabric is folded in half then gather a few inches from the fold so that I attach it to the dress at the gathered stitch. This saved me from having to stitch/finish multiple layers. The top has a dark blue crinoline base layer then carefully pinned and hand stitched with golden glass beads blue organza layer (3m).
I tried to put an invisible zipper but the dress ate it. It kept separating when I tested it. It was such a pain to remove that I simply cut out the track and installed a regular zipper over-top.
