Allura (Original design) - Voltron
Worn at:
Katsucon 2019 - National Habor, MD
Design
I love Allura's character in Voltron, although none of the costumes really spoke to me. So I boiled down a few idea about her and her design into this ballgown. Key inspirations are: space (swirling galaxies and stars) and modern high fashion netting/tulle gowns (See Christian Siriano and Giambattista Valli for ideas).
Description:
Wig: A silver Luthien from Arda Wigs with curled bangs.
Skirt: The base is a peasant skirt made with black twill. I added several sections of horsehair braid on several layers of the skirt. Initially I was planning on wearing the skirt without a hoop-skirt and the braid would help give it a wavy characteristic, I I opted for the hoop-skirt in the end. I got 10m of fairy lights, that I then encased in bias tape to hide the copper wire. I cut out holes for all the lights, then glued it down to the skirt.
I bought several bolts of netting in several colours and gathered metres and metres of it to make the fluffy layers. I would not have bothered even attempting this dress without a gathering foot. I highly recommend it for neat even layers. After I've gathered enough fabric I started draping it to solidify the pattern and colour scheme. After I settled on a look, I drew out the pattern with a marking pencil then again with pattern tape and masking tape. One by one, I sewed down the layers. There was so much fabric, I had to feed the fabric through the machine because it was so heavy. I had to drape the rest of the skirt on a chair to easily feed the rest trough the machine. The top layer is tacked down with a few hand stitches to hide the waistband. There are several spiral patterned layers that were hand stitched because it was chaos trying to sew with the machine.
Then I hand applied with pliers or a magnetic pencil many rhinestones to all the layers with Gemtac.
Top: I had a hard time settling on a design for the top but I decided on a halter look to have a nice contrast of tons of fabric with some skin. I used a Mood bodysuit pattern as a base using blue ultrapreme from Cosplay Fabrics. I basically only used the front part of the pattern and connected it to a blue ribbon collar reinforced with flexifirm and to the skirt. I layered netting over top and added some rhinestones at the neckline for extra glitter.
Headdress: I disassembled several fake cherry blossom flowers from Michael's and regrouped them together with floral wire until I made a chain of flowers including big berry colored peony flowers. I made a base with worbla and attached BBQ skewers and spray painted it gold. Then I wired down pearl Christmas floral stems that I rearranged and filled in with extra pearls for the right look. The flowers where then attached with wires to the worbla base and then again to a plastic headband which holds it onto the wig.
