Otakuthon 2016 - Montreal Yeticon 2024 - Collingwood, ON Why this costume: I'm a sucker for AION designs and red and gold happens to be one of my favourite combinations. Description: The Dress: I patterned this dress using a cheongsam pattern from Cosmode as a base. I heavily modified it after draping a draft on my dressform. I used McCalls 7218 (Yaya's Peacock costume pattern) for the sleeve pattern. The gold trim was purchased from AliExpress and airbrushed it a slightly less sparkly gold. My favourite part of this costume was figuring out how I wanted the gold raised details. I bought a collection of silicone icing molds and used art gel for casting. Since it dries flexible, I didn't have to worry about it holding the right shape. They are glued on with E6000 fabric glue. The Wing: I made a harness with synthetic strapping and a twill panel with two ribbon channels. It goes on like a back pack that strap on under the chest. The wing itself is made with eva foam with a wire frame. Two wire extend from the wing to insert into the ribbon channels. Craft foam feathers were cut and glued to the EVA foam base, then everything got a coat of black gesso. Finally, the wing was airbrushed gold and shadows were added with black airbrush paint. The red cape is attached with velcro under a hidden foam panel. |
