Kida - Atlantis (Hannah Alexander design)
Designed by: Hannah Alexander
Worn at:
Katsucon 2016- Washington DC
Description:
After a having a blast with our No Flutter Sailor Moon cosplays, a group of us decided to tackle another big group project, this time it was Hannah Alexander's designs for the Disney princesses. I chose Kida although I was tempting to do quite a few.
Wig: I used a white Victoria from Arda Wigs. I pinned all the long curls in the back by hand sewing them down with white thread to the vertical lace strips. The strands on the side were straightened with a flat iron. Then I gave it a light coating of Got2Glued hairspray before applying the rhinestones with Gemtac.
Dress: Sooooo much silk. VickybunnyAngel was nice enough to sort out the bulk order of white silk georgette. I gradient dyed them with turquoise Tintex. Turns out, this fabric shrinks when you dye it (or wash it) so if some cuts shrunk so much I couldn't them. The big challenge for this costume was spending a week applying rhinestones. I covered my work table with wax paper to protect the surface while I added them with a pair of flat noses jewelry pliers and Gemtac. There is a mix of 4mm and 6mm gems used for both the white and red detail. The front panel has a hand drawn lace pattern, done with puffy paint. I used paint instead of actual lace because I don't think I could find a lace to match the attributes of the silk or that could easily curve as in this design.
The leotard underneath is made of blue jersey, leftovers from my Korra cosplay. It zips up the back and closes with a hook and eye.
Staff: The base is a one inch wooden dowel cut into 3 pieces for easy transport. It connects together using double-end screws. The stone and spear ends are made with insulation foam covered in Worbla. I used a stippled painting technique on the blade to give it more texture than flat white. The handle is made with Worbla scraps. Wrapped around the staff is some scrap suede leftover from other costumes.
Necklace: I'm so glad I was able to find beads in a similar shape to hers, although in the wrong colours. So I had to hand paint all the beads red and gold. I bought the turquoise pendants and the gold strung beads, but the red and pearl ones were hand made with Worbla.
Headpiece: Using the original illustration, I isolated the headpiece in Photoshop and enlarged it to scale then printed it. Using the printout I sculpted it with Black Worbla scraps.I cast the central gem myself using resin and ink, plus I added a gold metallic backing to give it extra shimmer.
